For 2015 we will be doing the Life and Times of Blue Duck and walking you through his training regimen (link is just below). I use the word regimen because once they gain a new level of training that level becomes their new standard and their way of life.  I do not allow them to return to a sloppy or slouchy way, once they have attained the new standard. We will train blue and explain the what, why, and how.

If someone else made a video that accomplishes the same thing we put it in the files below. If it isn't our video we can not recommend the person as a trainer but it means we agree with the video you are watching.  This section is for customers present and previous.  We send you a password to access the traning video free of charge.

Words of advise on beginning training with your new puppy. Discussion on here, sit, and positive and negative reinforcement.

Once you work on it inside take it outdoors and repeat.  In about 4 to 5 sessions indoors and outdoors you will notice you are getting excellent responses.  Don't worry about a slouchy lazy sit at this point you will refine the sit as time goes on.

From the time their eyes open we begin exposing them to gun shots.  First during feeding time and during playtimes we get out a small cap gun that is pretty loud and shoot it off while they are feeding or playing.  We do that several times a week.  Around 10 weeks you can take them out with birds fresh or frozen.  Have your partner hold the collar and start about 30 yards away with a 22 cal. or blank pistol and get their attention by saying hey! hey! hey! Throw the bird and shoot wile the bird is in the air. Send the pup after the bird.  Have an extra dead bird with you to toss to them in case they don't see the first bird.  It is important for them to succeed.  Success makes a confident dog.  Then move half way and repeat a few times.  Then stand right next to the pup and repeat.  If at any stage you see shyness, jerking away from the noise move back out to the farther distance and do that for 2 more days before moving closer.  Then move up to a 20 or 12 gauge and repeat on a subsequent day.

Classic example of trying to train to fast and moving on to the next lesson before they master the first.  The animal is confused doesn't know why it is punished and trys to escape the confusion.

George Hickox has a worthy video for whoa training titled "Training Pointing Dogs" four volumes on one disc and it costs about $35 gundogsupply.com.  Anyhow he uses a barrel.  I built one and used it also it didn't seem to do much more than using the board or a dog training table so in my opinion you could forgo the barrell aspect.  Once you dog understands that "whoa" means hold still on all fours and not to sit then I take them out and play fetch with a tennis ball and when they are on their way back to me I "whoa" them.  If they start to sit I call them to "here" with enough practice they begin to understand if they do sit just go over and lift them back on all fours and repeat the command and then call to here.  I can't express the importance of this is fundamental command it is vital to getting them staunch on point.  Get the "whoa" command down and you will instill a strong since of point.  There are other methods and I ran across a few on youtube I will include below.

This one is good for crate, retrieve, whoa training etc.  The whoa is about 10 minutes into it.

What you need to know about e-collar training

Heel command

Sit Command

Here Command

Down Command.  This the last thing I teach as I do not want them to get confused with sit and down.

Tritronics has an awesome 6 part series on the "hold" command.  This should be done prior to force fetching in my view it would alleviate many of the issues that come during force fetch.  I am not a fan of the older tritronics collars and use dogtra exclusively.  The other thing would be to use the "drop" command and not "out" although I understand that any word can be used "out" just seems a bit off.  You may have to go to youtube.com to search the titles to find the other 5 videos.

Feel free to call us anytime you have a training issue.  We may very well save you weeks of aggrivating experiences.
